Airspace Classification

Beschreibung
Airspace classification is an essential element in the implementation of air traffic policy, air traffic regulations and air traffic management. It is used to structure airspace to ensure safe and efficient air traffic. It regulates which aircraft may use which area in which manner, and which air navigation services are available. Airspace is divided into different categories, each with specific regulations. These regulations relate to flight safety, air traffic control and restrictions for certain types of aircraft, among other things, and are classified based on factors such as traffic type and density, and proximity to airports.

The course aims at providing participants with knowledge, understanding and practice of airspace classification including how airspace is effectively structured in terms of airspace of different classes around e.g. large, medium and small airports as well as depending on height/altitude and taking account of the various airspace users and other requirements. Applicable reference material is addressed in the course as well as various applications in advanced countries. A site visit to a state-of-the-art area control centre is used to deepen the understanding on airspace classification in relation with traffic demands. Participants are taught best practice methods to develop airspace classification, which are applied in exercises regarding airspace classification for the participants’ home country.
